Great Big Sea’s Alan Doyle Hosts Songwriter’s Circle

The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) has recently announced that Great Big Sea’s Alan Doyle will be hosting the Songwriter’s Circle on Sunday, April 2. This event will be held at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium in the Dalhousie Arts Centre in Halifax, NS.

Newfoundland native, Doyle has written many songs for Great Big Sea that range from sensitive ballads such as “Something Beautiful” to crowd pleasers like “When I Am King”. While writing, Doyle has collaborated with artists such as Gordie Sampson, Chris Trapper and Russell Crowe. He has also recently began writing for TV and film soundtracks.

While hosting the Songwriter’s Circle, Doyle will be included in an “up and personal” concert with 2006 JUNO Award nominee for New Artist of the Year, Martha Wainwright and 2006 JUNO Award nominee for Songwriter of the Year, Ron Sexsmith. These writers will reminisce about the creative process of song writing on stage.

Wainwright has recently released her self-titled debut album and has worked with artists such as Linda Thompson and Geoff Muldar. She has been compared to artists such as Tori Amos and PJ Harvey.

Canadian singer/songwriter, Sexsmith has earned worldwide acclaim from artists such as Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello and John Hiatt. He has released nine albums and has received awards such as Critics’ Choice Major Independent Album Of The Year Award at the 2002 and 2003 Canadian Independent Music Awards and Songwriter of the Year at the 2005 JUNO Awards.

Proceeds from the Songwriter’s Circle will go to MusiCan, CARAS’ music education program that provides musical instrument grants and scholarships to Canadian schools. Tickets are $35 and went on sale Friday, February 24.
