Workshop Teachers Announced For KoSA Eleven

The 11th Annual KoSA International Percussion Workshop and Festival will be held at Johnson State College in Johnson, VT from Aug. 7-13, and the workshop teachers have been announced.

Giovanni Hidalgo will teach hands-on conga classes all week while Bernard Purdie teaches the essence of groove. Michael Wimberley and his Ensemble will teach African drumming and dance. Antonio Sanchez just finished Pat Matheny’s world tour and will be teaching his innovative drumming concepts. Percussionist for Saturday Night Live and Broadway’s The Lion King, Valerie Naranjo, will cover Kobine Traditional and West African keyboard percussion. Kenwood Dennard of Berklee College and Sting, will return to the show and new to the show is master drum circle facilitator and world percussionist, Kalani, who will conduct daily classes. Jazz vibraphone legend David Friedman is travelling from Germany to take part as well.

The KoSA Workshop is a hands-on percussion camp for participants of all levels and ages from 8-80 years old. It covers a variety of styles such as rock, jazz, Latin, funk, classical percussion, Brazilian/Arabic/Indian hand drumming, Afro-Caribbean rhythms, Japanese Taiko drumming, solo marimba, jazz vibraphone, timpani, snare drum, percussion ensemble, percussion for band directors and classes in music technology. There are daily classes at this workshop and evening concerts that are open to the public. The Grand Finale Faculty Concert is recorded live for CD release.
