I’ve Hit The Mother Load…

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Bounce over to CBC Radio 2‘s site and check out the "Concerts On Demand" section. You’ll find streamable shows from pretty much every type of Canadian artist imaginable with damn impressive audio quality. I’ve been rocking Plaskett, Tegan & Sara, and the Pavlo, Rik Emmett, and Oscar Lopez trio all night. Check out the latter in our upcoming guitar feature. Happy streaming!

Embarrassing Early Music Careers

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Spinner.ca has posted a short piece on the "embarrassing" (their word, not mine) early music careers of some pretty big stars, including Ottawa’s own Alanis Morissette and her early ’00s dance pop career, which apparently even landed her an opening slot with Vanilla Ice. Also funny: members of The Bravery in a ska band called Skabba The Hutt.

Anyhow, you can check it out here. Any funny stories from your musical past? I used to play in a pretty terrible metalcore band in high-school, though one of our members has since gone on to a current metal group that you might hear about in the next few months.

Anyhow, enjoy!

Let Me Tell You A Story

Friday, April 16th, 2010

A few weekends ago, my girlfriend and I were set to hit a show by English Words and our friends in In-Flight Safety. Needless to say, I was absolutely stoked, but perhaps more so after receiving a call from an old high-school friend, saying she’d be on the Island that same Saturday with her boyfriend’s band, Ladybird. Now, being we’d already committed to the IFS show, I was a little disappointed until discovering that Ladybird was performing in some place called Breadalbane, which according to Google Maps, was pretty much half way between Summerside and Charlottetown, and maybe 3 minutes out of the way. Looks like we can have our cake and eat it too, right? So…

Have Time For A Quick Game?

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

I had a lot of fun with this for a few minutes the other day. Essentially, you have to name the title of a number of classic rock tunes (yeah, there are a few Canadians in there…) based on 10-second snippets with the vocal tracks removed. Oh, and I would’ve posted a cooler photo, but didn’t want to give up any clues…

Post your scores if you’re not ashamed…

A Treat For Axe Slingers

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Our next issue of Canadian Musician (July/August 2010) contains our annual guitar feature, and this year we’ve lined up yet another monster panel of Canadian and international axe slingers – including metal mastermind Devin Townsend – talking about current projects, their gear of choice, and opinions on the instrument in general. There are also some tips for developing players, so be sure to pick up the issue.

Of course, we look after all kinds of players, so we also have a great bass column by Stephen of The Balconies, some key-centric content in our cover story on one of Canada’s quickest-rising pop starlets, and of course, some great unsigned bands in our Showcase section. Keep an eye out for it next month!

CMW Goes Down Under

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

As part of an ongoing partnership with members of Australia’s music community, Canadian Music Week is now offering an opportunity for Canadian artists to be spotlighted as part of the One Movement For Music Perth, running October 6-9 2010.. Any artists interested in applying for a spot should contact before May 31st. If you’re thinking of heading down before or after that on your own, check out "The Southern Compass" on the CMW website, a how-to guide to touring Australia and New Zealand.

Apparently, the music industries in Australia and Canada are quite akin, so take a look into the opportunities available at http://cmw.net.
