CM Does Festival Music House, Day 2
Wednesday, September 12th, 2012Another day of TIFF means another night of the Festival Music House, and last night’s lineup easily rivaled that of the first. Humans, PS I Love You, Hey Ocean!, Dan Mangan, and Yukon Blonde were the Canucks on Tuesday night’s bill at the Virgin Mobile Mod Club, and once again, CM joined the dozens of other music industry folk and TIFF delegates on the floor.
Once again, the hustle of the city kept us from hitting the show at doors, so no dice on Humans’ indie electro soul pop (I stole the description from their website, but it’s more than apt). To make up for that, I think I’ll give Traps a spin later today and will aim to catch the band at the Halifax Pop Explosion. They have some other tour dates up on their site as well…
Another thanks to JJ Thompson/medianeeds.ca for the images from nights 1 & 2.
PS I Love You brings an impressive amount of energy to the stage – especially for a two-piece. It’s no wonder they’ve been winning over so many in so little time. It really only takes a song or two (if that) to realize you’re witnessing something special We overheard something like “Their recorded works don’t do them justice,” and while Death Dreams is one hell of an effort, their live show really is something to behold.
Watching Hey Ocean! progress as a musical unit over the course of a few years and a few shows has been a treat – and a rewarding one as they start to come into their own. There’s a very west-coast kind of je-ne-sais-quoi to their music, and that was certainly abundant last night. They were probably the “fell good” act of the night (tough when you’re playing with Yukon Blonde) and whether the crowd was engulfed in their performance or engaged in private conversation, everyone showed love in between songs.
Dan Mangan is such a great performer. One of my favourites, actually. He sounded great, as always, last night and had quite the gang of musicians around him that really elevated what he was able to do with his material. The “orchestration” (for lack of better word) of the performance made me pretty excited to hear what he does with Symphony Nova Scotia during HPX next month.
Finally, Yukon Blonde brought the night to a close. I can’t get “My Girl” out of my head or Tiger Talk out of my car’s CD player.
