This year marks the 35th anniversary of the DMC World organization and the eighth year since the reboot of DMC Canada. DMC’s Canadian branch is in the process of scheduling its 2018 Canadian DMC Battleground, which will see Canadian DJs compete to represent Canada at the DMC World Championships.

DMC was founded in the U.K. in 1983 by Tony Prince as the first legal, members-only, remix pool that serviced DJs worldwide with cassettes and vinyl featuring the latest sounds from across the globe. In 1986, the DMC World DJ Competition was established as an annual global event that continues to provide a high-profile stage for DJs to test their skills against their peers. Some of the world’s most notable DJs have competed in the DMC World DJ Championships including, A-Trak, Q-Bert, Mix Master Mike (Beastie Boys), DJ Muggs (Cypress Hill), Carl Cox, and Roger Sanchez. Over the years, an abundance of celebrity guest performers have also graced the stage of the DMC World Finals, including James Brown, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Run DMC, Public Enemy, and more.  The competition has evolved over time from its humble beginnings but remains true to the art form of turntablism and their utilization as instruments rather than simple playback devices.

The Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA), which represents the country’s indie music industry, has voiced its displeasure with the new federal budget, which was unveiled by Finance Minister Bill Morneau on Feb. 27, 2018. CIMA says the budget fails to provide much-needed additional support for the Canadian independent music sector.

“Current funding programs, such as the [Canadian Music Fund (CMF )], are over-subscribed and underfunded,” says CIMA President Stuart Johnston says. “The Federal Government missed an important opportunity to support Canadian creators and the world-class entrepreneurs such as record label executives, managers, and publishers who leverage the Canada Music Fund investments for our artists.”
