Junos to Recognize Canadian Philanthropist & Music Industry Icon Gary Slaight with 2018 Humanitarian Award

Gary SlaightThe Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) has announced that broadcast and music industry leader and philanthropist Gary Slaight will be honoured with the 2018 Humanitarian Award. CARAS says Slaight personifies the essence of the award through his devotion to Canadian music and emerging Canadian artists as well as his philanthropic support of health care, social service, culture, and at-risk youth at home and abroad.

Given out annually at the JUNO Awards, the Humanitarian Award celebrates and recognizes the philanthropic efforts made by Canadian artists or industry leaders who have made a positive impact on social welfare worldwide. This year’s award will be presented at the JUNO Gala Dinner & Awards Presented by SOCAN on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at the Vancouver Convention Centre in Vancouver.

RIP Marlene Palmer, Publicist for Some of Canada’s Biggest Stars

marlene-palmer-billboard-1548Marlene Palmer, who worked with some of the biggest names of Canadian music, died of ovarian cancer at 3 a.m., Saturday, December 30th, 2017 at the Victoria Hospice in Victoria, BC, according to her husband Phillip Hurst. She was 62.

Unfailingly cheerful, a valued colleague, friend and confidant to all, Marlene was a much sought after publicist, and a tenacious advocate for her clients. She had an incisive wit, great creative instincts, and came from a PR tradition that the media was to be treated with respect.

Feldman Agency’s Jeff Craib to be Inducted into Canadian Music & Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame

JUNO Host Committee to Award $25,000 in Micro-Grants

The 2018 JUNO Host Committee has announced that 25 $1,000 grants are being made available for artists, venues, promoters, and music organizers to present unique musical experiences across the Lower Mainland, and in communities throughout B.C.  during JUNO Week 2018. The 47th annual JUNO Awards and JUNO Week 2018 will be hosted in Vancouver from March 19-25, 2018, culminating in The JUNO Awards Broadcast on CBC on Sunday, March 25.

Music Canada & SOCAN Welcome Government Review of the Copyright Act

copyright iamgeLast week, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, Navdeep Bains, in conjunction with Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage, launched the federal government’s review of the Copyright Act with a motion asking the Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology to conduct a study on the issue. The review of the Copyright Act was expected as the 2012 reforms to the law mandated a five-year review in order to assess the effectiveness of the regulations.

Music Canada Live Responds to Passing of Ontario’s Ticket Sales Act

Earlier today the Government on Ontario voted to pass the Ticket Sales Act as part of a larger consumer protection bill. The government says the new laws will protect music and sports fans by giving them fairer access to event tickets. The biggest changes under the new law is that it is now illegal for scalpers to use ticket buying technology called “bots” to buy up large groups of tickets, and it also caps the resale price of tickets on such websites as StubHub at 50 per cent over face value.

As a response to these new rules, industry association Music Canada Live, led by Executive Director Erin Benjamin, has released the following state:

“Music Canada Live congratulates the Ontario Government on the passing of the Ticket Sales Act. Banning harmful BOT technology and empowering ticketing companies and live events through civil litigation are steps in the right direction.

The JUNO Awards, MusiCounts & TD Bank Group Renew Partnership

The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) and TD Bank Group have announced the renewal of their seven year partnership. The exclusive collaboration will provide enhanced and continued support for Canadian music through a variety of events, community, and educational programs across the country.

As part of the renewed collaboration, MusiCounts says that TD will be increasing its support with a contribution of $1.875 million, over the next three years. As Canada’s music education charity associated with CARAS, MusiCounts serves communities across Canada by giving under-served youth access to musical instruments and equipment. To date, the initiative has supported almost 100 programs across Canada with over $1.7 million provided in instruments and equipment.

Music Canada, Re:Sound, and Bell Media has announced new advancements in cross-platform reporting that they say will usher in a new era of cooperation between Canada’s music and media industries. Developed by Bell Media, Music Canada and Re:Sound, the new process aligns terrestrial broadcast data with digital in order to ensure all music industry stakeholders are served with greater efficiency, transparency, and accountability, while setting a new industry standard for data reporting. With this initiative by Bell Media, the automation of the existing music content distribution tool allows the industry to streamline sound recording data within the Canadian music ecosystem.
