Rifflandia to Expands its Industry & Showcase Initiatives in September

To coincide with its 10th anniversary, Rifflandia Festival has teamed up with Music BC to expand its industry and showcase initiatives in 2017. Starting on Thursday, Sept. 14th, Victoria will welcome industry delegates from around the world to take part in the annual festival and its slate of BC artists and performers.

In partnership with Rifflandia and Music BC’s How-To Series, the weekend will feature multiple panels and B2B meetings, as part of our commitment to support artists and industry professionals in British Columbia. Confirmed delegates from across the globe include representatives from: ATC Live (UK), Sound Diplomacy (UK), AEG Presents (USA), Spotify (USA), WME (USA), Konzertburo Schoeneberg GmbH (GER), Music Solutions (JPN), Vladimir Radovanov Law (USA), as well as other BC and Canadian music industry professionals.

Suspicious Fire Further Wrecks Quebec’s Legendary ‘Le Studio’

le studioThe legendary, but long closed, Quebec recording facility, Le Studio, has been the site of a suspicious fire, according to multiple news reports. The studio – which in its heyday hosted clients like Rush, Cat Stevens, David Bowie, and The Police – had been closed and the building unused since 2008 and had fallen into disrepair.

According to the CBC, the fire department received a call around 5:30 a.m. on Friday morning, Aug. 11. It’s also reported that the fire department believes the fire was purposely set and an investigation is now taking place.

Top 10 Finalists for Allan Slaight JUNO Master Class Revealed

Honey Jam Concert Returning to Toronto’s Mod Club on Aug. 24

honey jam smallFor 22 years, Honey Jam has fostered the development of up-and-coming female artists, resulting in successful alumni such as Nelly Furtado, Melanie Fiona, and Jully Black. The annual Honey Jam Canada Concert returns on Thursday August 24, 2017 at the Mod Club Theatre in Toronto.

This year’s concert features 15 artists from across Canada. These artists, hailing from Montreal, Toronto, Thunder Bay, Brampton, Vancouver, and Nova Scotia, represent a diverse range of genres including pop, hip hop, R&B, soul, blues and rock. The lineup was announced at Honey Jam’s recent launch that featured an inspiring talk with special guest Grammy-award winning singer, songwriter and actor Letoya Luckett, one of the original members of Destiny’s Child.

Music Canada Applauds the Federal Government for Initiating Consultations on Copyright Board of Canada reform

Graham Henderson ECCMusic Canada has issued the following statement, which commends the federal government for launching a consultation process to reform the Copyright Board of Canada. The Copyright Board of Canada’s purpose is to establishe royalties for the use of copyrighted content in a broad range of areas where the administration of such copyright is entrusted to a collective management organization. This includes music streaming, the public performance of music, educational copying, and the re-transmission of television signals.

IMSTA FESTA Toronto Returning to Ryerson University in October

IMSTA FESTAThe fourth annual IMSTA FESTA Toronto show will head back to Ryerson University on Saturday Oct. 14, 2017.  Presented by the International Music Software Trade Association (IMSTA) and the SAE Institute, IMSTA FESTA events will be held in Chicago, New York, and Berlin, in addition to Toronto, and showcase the latest music-making and production technologies as well as educational seminars and keynotes speeches and Q&As.

National Music Centre Releases First Annual Report: Touts Success Despite Tough Alberta Economy

The National Music Centre (NMC) has released a report summarizing the first year of operations for Studio Bell. Studio Bell, which houses the National Music Centre, opened to the public in July 2016. Since opening day, it has welcomed over 100,000 visitors and more than 680 events have been hosted at the building.

“The National Music Centre is well on its way to becoming a national cultural institution and a well-known landmark for Calgary,” says Andrew Mosker, president and CEO of the National Music Centre. “And, while this last year has been a difficult one for many in the province, we are committed to seizing on the entrepreneurial spirit that has helped propel so many Albertans forward over the years, and using it to remain competitive, innovative and fully viable during tougher economic times.”

Music Heals Launches ‘Covers For The Cause’ Fundraising Initiative

Covers For The Cause provides a platform for artists to offer their fans personalized videos of songs that they request by making a tax-deductible donation to Music Heals.

The Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) has announced that Dallas Smith, James Barker Band, and international guest Blake Shelton will all take to the stage to perform at the 2017 CCMA Awards Show. Taking place at the SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon, SK on Sunday, Sept. 10, the show will broadcast at 8 p.m. ET that night on CBC. Already announced to perform are Dean Brody, Brett Kissel, and Jess Moskaluke.

MusiCounts Announces 2017 Fred Sherratt Award Recipients

On July 12, MusiCounts, Canada’s music education charity associated with the JUNO Awards, hosted an intimate Toronto tour to celebrate the 2017 Fred Sherratt Award recipients. The Award recognizes the outstanding achievement, talent, and leadership of graduating students selected from post-secondary music programs across the country. The celebration included a tour of the Bell Media headquarters, Revolution Recording studio, iconic venue Massey Hall, and  label and management company eOne & Last Gang Records. Award-winning broadcasting pioneer  Fred Sherratt was on hand to congratulate the 12 recipients and present them with their awards.
