According to reporter Jordan Press of The Canadian Press, the federal Liberal government is telling music industry insiders that it plans to make long-sought changes, and also add more money, to the Canada Music Fund in its 2019 federal budget. Canadian music industry organizations, such as the Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA), were publicly critical of the government’s 2018 budget for its lack of new arts funding. Over the last two years, Heritage Minister Melanie Joly has consulted closely with stakeholders in the music industry on needed changes on a wide array of topics, from funding to the changes to the Copyright Board of Canada.

According to the Canadian Press, the federal government has been telling music industry insiders that it will enlarge the Canada Music Fund, which hasn’t seen a boost in a decade, by an unspecified amount. The government reportedly also plans to change how the money is distributed to reflect declining physical and download music sales and the rapid growth of streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music.
