MusiCounts Announces $100,000 Contribution From The Gord Bamford Foundation

Today, Canadian music education charity MusiCounts celebrated the start of Country Music Week with an announcement that the Gord Bamford Foundation is renewing its commitment to MusiCounts with a $100,000 donation. The Gord Bamford Foundation had previously made a generous donation of $100,000 in 2014. A non-profit organization, the Gord Bamford Foundation is passionate about supporting youth and through the ongoing partnership, MusiCounts will be able to provide musical instruments to children who need them most for years to come.

Coalition for Music Education Appoints New Interim Executive Director

Angela ElsterThe board of directors of the Coalition for Music Education has appointed Angela Elster as Interim Executive Director effective immediately.

“We are delighted that Angela has agreed to temporarily relinquish her seat on the Board to take on this important role as the Coalition prepares for a new school year,” said Eric Favaro, chair of the board.  “Ms. Elster brings to this position a wealth of experience in the field of music and arts education, leading innovative projects that have enabled children and youth to experience the power of the arts in schools and communities across Canada and around the world.”  This interim appointment allows more time for the Executive and Board to establish a leadership model moving forward.

Manitoba’s Faouzia Wins Grand Prize in Unsigned Only Music Competition

FaouziaThe winners of the U.S.-based Unsigned Only Music Competition were announced yesterday and the grand prize winner was 17-year-old Canadian artist Faouzia. Selected from 6,000 entries from almost 100 countries, the winners share in over $150,000 in cash and prizes split among 28 winners. Unsigned Only is open to all artists who are unsigned to a major record label.

All entries are narrowed down to a group of finalists that are given to the panel of judges whose task is to select the winners. The panel is comprised of renowned recording artists, music journalists, and music supervisors, including such celebrities as: Aimee Mann, MercyMe, The Killers, O.A.R., Phantogram, Montgomery Gentry, David Crowder, Delbert McClinton, and many more.

Canada’s Music Incubator & National Music Centre Announce National Call for Submissions for AE West

AEWestCanada’s Music Incubator (CMI) and the National Music Centre (NMC) are launching AE West this fall and have announced a national call for submissions.

AE West, which stands for Artist Entrepreneur West, is a five-week creative entrepreneurship program to help emerging professional artists, of all musical genres, develop sustainable businesses and careers via hands-on mentoring, networking, and collaboration. It will take place at Studio Bell (850 4 Street SE, Calgary, AB) from November 7–December 8, 2017.

CBC Music & MusiCounts Launch 3rd Annual Canadian Music Class Challenge

1024px-Music_class_usaCBC Music in association with MusiCounts has announced the return of the Canadian Music Class Challenge, which encourages eligible music classes, music clubs, and after-school programs to submit a video performance of a Canadian song (full 2017 list below) for a chance to win one of six $5,000 classroom recording studios. This year’s competition launches on Sept. 1 and will close on Nov. 24, with winners to be announced on CBC Radio 2 Morning with Raina Douris on Dec. 15.

Red Bull Music Academy Returns to Montreal for 4-Day Weekender Next Month

SOCAN and Re:Sound are working together on a joint licensing portal that will benefit the two organizations’ respective rights holders – songwriters, composers, publishers for SOCAN and artists and record labels for Re:Sound – by making the licensing process simpler and more straightforward for businesses like bars and restaurants, hairdressers, and retailers that play music in their establishments.

The pilot will allow music users to obtain a single report and payment for their use of recorded music through an online portal. This portal will serve as a one-stop-shop where businesses can report and pay both their quarterly SOCAN and Re:Sound licensing fees in one place, rather than reporting and paying separately for licenses with each organization.

The Western Canadian Music Alliance (WCMA) has released the full festival and conference schedules for the 2017 edition of BreakOut West (BOW), taking place from Sept. 13-17 in Edmonton. BOW incorporates a four-day conference, three-night music festival, and the Western Canadian Music Awards.

The BreakOut West Music Festival features a multi-genre line-up of over 50 established and emerging artists from Western Canada performing at multiple venues throughout Edmonton. New this year is the East Meets West collaboration between the East Coast Music Association and WCMA, which will see Maritime artist like PEI’s Dylan Menzie Nova Scotia’s Hillsburn showcase at BOW. In this reciprocal arrangement, western artists will be selected to perform at the next East Coast Music Week.

UTA’s Former Canadian Agents Finding New Homes; APA & Paradigm Opening Toronto Offices

Karen Bliss at Billboard.com has reported that following the surprising Aug. 1st announcement that UTA would close its Canadian office in Toronto, a number of the let go agents and other staff have found homes. Most prominently, former UTA COO Jack Ross and CEO Ralph James are going to lead a new Toronto office for APA, while Rob Zifarelli and Adam Countryman are doing the same for Paradigm.

Additionally, according to Billboard, Stefanie Purificati and Mike Graham are joining Ross and James at the new APA Canadian office. Paquin Artists Agency, a Canadian company, are hiring Adam Kreeft, Rob Thornton, and Sarah Litt. It’s believed that most of the artists represented by the agents will follow them to their new agencies.
