Roots Music Community Gathers To ‘Raise The Roof And Raise The Rent’

January 6th, 2012

Andy Frank is one of the best-known people in the growing Canadian roots music scene. The Toronto videographer, broadcaster,  and co-founder of the website www.rootsmusic.ca was recently diagnosed with cancer — an event he described with wry humour on his personal website.

His partner in www.rootsmusic.ca, David Newland, was planning to launch his new CD at Hugh’s Room on January 26, but, instead, he will host a benefit event to support his friend. Within hours, an impressive cast of performers had volunteered to “raise the roof and raise the rent” for Sandy Frank, who will be unable to work until after his treatment has concluded. Performers include: Jay Aymar, Jon Brooks, Shawna Caspi, Annabelle Chvostek, Crabtree & Mills, Bill Garrett & Curly Boy Stubbs, Grit Laskin, Layah Jane, Rosemary Phelan, Rob Szabo, and Suzie Vinnick.

Said David Newland: “Andy has been a tireless supporter of the Canadian folk and roots scene. He has interviewed, hosted, reviewed, webcast, documented or simply raved about the work of hundreds of independent musicians, helping them realize their own potential as creative artists.

“Andy’s diagnosis of cancer of the colon is the shock of his lifetime — and it means some serious downtime with no income as he clears his schedule to allow himself time for surgery, chemo treatment, and recuperation.”

Where: Hugh’s Room, 2261 Dundas Street West, Toronto

When: Thursday, January 26. Doors: 6 p.m., concert at 8.30 p.m.

Tickets: $18 advance/$20 at the door, available at Hugh’s Room (416) 531-6604/www.hughsroom.com.  Dinner reservations recommended.
