Montreal, Toronto Recognized As Global Indie Music Trendsetters

Are Canadian cities establishing popular trends in the global indie music scene? According to a study by researchers at the University College Dublin, the answer is “yes.”

Using online data obtained from the social media site last.fm, researchers were able to determine which cities have the greatest influence on global musical trends.

Using more than 60 billion individual listener-preferences from more than 200 cities between the years 2003 and 2011, the researchers were able to determine which of these cities exert the greatest influence in the popularity of music as it flows to other geographical areas.   (more…)

Toronto’s Official Musicians Swap Meet & Guitar Show

The second annual Guitar Show & Swap Meet will be taking place in Toronto on June 3, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at 1083 Pape Avenue, Toronto.

Last year’s show attracted over 400 attendees and over 30 vendors. This event is a chance for musicians to buy, sell, and trade their musical equipment from vintage guitars to P.A systems and promote their endeavours. (more…)

Warren Price, Founder of Mother’s Music Passes, 1941-2012

On April 20, 2012, Warren Price, Founder and Owner of the Mother’s Music chain of music stores, passed away peacefully in his sleep surrounded by family at the age of 70 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Price leaves behind his immediate family, Lloy, his daughter Laurie, daughter Ginger and her husband Al, and four grandchildren Brittini, Olivia, Jason, and Cole.  (more…)

Shaw Festival Launches Contest To Discover Next Great Ragtime Pianist

The Shaw Festival is celebrating the launch of its 2012 season, and the opening of this year’s marquee production, Ragtime, with Get Ready to Rag! – a contest that aims to discover the next great ragtime pianist.

The Niagara-based theatre company is inviting amateur piano players over the age of 13 to submit video clips of themselves playing their favourite ragtime composition, and submit them via Shaw’s Facebook page.

The winner will receive a Yamaha Clavinova digital piano valued at over $2,000 and will have the opportunity to perform for a live audience on Ragtime’s Opening Night. This powerful musical portrait of three families in turn-of-the-century America is a kaleidoscopic depiction of an era of innovation and change, set to the rhythms of ragtime. (more…)

All Welcome To Experience Roland In Toronto

Roland Canada is taking its Experience event to the Apollo Convention Centre next Tuesday, April 17 beginning at 7 p.m.

This free event will offer attendees an opportunity to demo Roland’s latest offerings including the new V-Drums and V-Guitar along with some yet to be released products. Layton Family Organ Restored

In the fall of 2009, the Schmidt Piano And Organ Service was contacted by Jack Layton, then Leader of the National Democratic Party (NDP), who was seeking to have the family organ restored. During the 1800s, the Layton family was involved in the piano and organ business, distributing and manufacturing pianos and pump or reed organs in and around Montreal. The organ, called The Symphony, was manufactured by the Thomas Organ Company in Woodstock, ON and sold by the Layton Brothers Piano and Organ Showrooms in Montreal. (more…)
