Garth Richardson Donates Production Fees To Music Heals

When the Toronto Maple Leafs were officially eliminated from entering the playoffs, Canadian record producing legend Garth Richardson (Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers) was forced to commit his producer fees for the next 54-40 record to Music Heals, a charitable foundation that supports a range of music therapy services in BC and across Canada. Fender Guitars To Go Public

Fender Musical Instruments Corp. have announced it has filed papers Thursday for a $200-million (U.S.) initial public offering.

Founded in 1946 by Leo Fender, the company created the Telecaster and Stratocaster guitars in the 1950s.

“The Fender brand in particular is closely associated with the birth of rock `n roll and has a strong legacy in music and in popular culture,” the company said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. (more…)

Steve’s Music President & Founder Steve Kirman Passes Away

It is with heavy heart that we at Canadian Musician announce the passing of Steve Kirman, President and Founder of the Steve’s Music chain of music stores. Kirman died on Saturday, March 3, 2012.

Kirman opened the first Steve’s Music 47 years ago in Montreal in 1965 when he was 19 years old. That store, located at 51 Rue St-Antoine Ouest, remains a landmark in the city, serving a significant segment of its music community. Throughout the years, Steve’s Music opened two additional locations in Toronto and Ottawa.

A funeral service for Kirman will take place at Montreal’s Paperman & Sons (3888 Jean Talon St. W.) on Tuesday, March 6th at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at the Beth Ora Congregation Section, Kehal Israel Cemetery, D.D.O. Shiva to be announced.

CM extends sympathy to Kirman’s family, friends, and colleagues during this time of mourning.

 

Tin Pan North 2012 Coming To T.O.

The 13th Annual Tin Pan North 2012, a three-day songwriter’s festival, is happening May 24-26 in Toronto.

Tin Pan North 2012 is a celebration of original songwriting with intimate shows held in the GTA over three nights. It’s based on the Tin Pan South Festival held annually in Nashville. In addition to showcasing local talent, each show features hit-makers in the songwriting world whose work exemplifies excellence in the craft. Last year’s show featured Canadian stalwarts Sylvia Tyson and Andy Kim, as well as five Nashville based writers – Brett Jones, Frank Myers, Danny Wells, Kerry, and Lynn Chater. (more…)
