streaming-music-services-logos-300x186Nielsen Music Canada has released its Q3 numbers for the nine-month period ending Sept. 28, 2017. Included in the findings are key insights into important industry trends in sales, streaming, and consumer engagement across the most popular platforms.

The Nielsen Music Canada Q3 numbers confirm that streaming continues to climb, with weekly on-demand audio streams surpassing 800 million for the first time ever, during the week ending Sept. 14, 2017. On-demand audio streams peaked at 852 million during the week ending Sept. 28, 2017 and have reached 27.6 billion so far in 2017, up from 15.4 billion a year ago. This 79.7 per cent year-over-year increase in on-demand Audio streaming has helped alleviate a 17 per cent decrease in album sales and 19 per cent decrease in digital track sales.

Ed Sheeran’s Divide is the leading album in total activity with 388,000 total consumption units so far this year (albums + TEA (Track Equivalent Albums) + audio on-demand SEA (Streaming Equivalent Albums)). Divide is followed by Drake’s More Life and Kendrick Lamar’s Damn.

The biggest song at the Q3 mark, in terms of total activity (digital song sales with streaming equivalent on-demand audio), is Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito” with one million consumption units. The song also tops the Digital Songs year-to-date list with 460,000 downloads.

In Q3, in its first week of release, Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” set the one week record for most streams with just over nine million.

The Latin genre has seen the largest audio streaming increase this year, with a 171% increase over 2016, thanks mainly to the success of the song “Despacito.” The Childrens, Rap and R&B genres follow close behind, with increases of 114%, 98% and 97% respectively.
