Red Bull Music Academy Returns to Montreal for 4-Day Weekender Next Month

August 30th, 2017

RBMAThe Red Bull Music Academy will return to Montreal for a four-day festival this Sept. 21-24, 2017. On the one-year anniversary of the 2016 Red Bull Music Academy in Montreal, which saw 70 music-makers from across the globe come together for five weeks of lectures, workshops, and mutual inspiration, this fall’s Red Bull Music Academy Weekender will feature a series of experimental and immersive events around the city celebrating music, its culture, and the transformative minds behind it. Audiences can expect a musical takeover featuring a wide range of performances and unique collaborations.

Sept. 21 – Temple Damné

The first night of the Red Bull Music Academy Weekender Montréal kicks off with an exploration of extreme music, navigating through dimensions of noise, drone, industrial techno and underground metal. The event will showcase a selection of boundary-pushing artists, including local power electronics savant Âmes Sanglantes, Montréal Academy alumna Pan Daijing, Canadian ambient drone duo Nadja, Baltimore experimentalist TRNSGNDR/VHS, Iranian-born and Montréal-raised performance artist SADAF and a special industrial set by Orphyx. Expect an evening of thundering noise and provocative pulsations from some of today’s most daring sound artists.

Sept. 22 – RBMA & Moonshine présentent Sagacité

For nearly three years, the Moonshine collective has hosted it’s lunar-based monthly event at unpredictable locations across Montréal. Focusing on the sweaty fringes of electronic music and the African sounds that form them, a two-room event filled with late summer jams will feature local residents Pierre Kwenders, Bonbon Kojak, M. Bootyspoon and Odile Myrtil, joined by Toronto selector Bambii and Portugal’s DJ Marfox with a little help from New York’s TYGAPAW, Le1f and Total Freedom. Buckle up for what’s to be an intoxicating celebration of diversity and dance culture.

Sept. 23 – RBMA & Never Apart Present: Equinox

Following the success of last year’s Equinox collaboration, Red Bull Music Academy and Never Apart join forces once again for a 13-hour, 2-stage marathon of thought-provoking and eminently danceable house and techno. This edition will kick off the party in Usine-C’s courtyard, pairing a return to disco connoisseur Jayda G’s homeland with the Canadian debut of Academy alumna and Ectotherm label head Courtesy. Local A/V visionaries susy.technology will again be creating an immersive space to showcase the sounds of Discwoman’s Umfang & Volvox, Cómeme’s Borusiade and a special live set from Australian experimentalist Carla Dal Forno. Derek Plaslaiko and Carlos Souffront will close out the night in a manner only the Interdimensional Transmissions veterans are capable of in a special extended back-to-back set.

Sept. 24 – Une Soirée avec Rhye

Red Bull Music Academy Weekender Montréal 2017 comes to a close with a special performance from the ethereal R&B duo Rhye. Gearing up for the release of their second studio album, the soul-pop act recently released two new singles, “Please” and “Summer Days,” marking their first new music since their well-received 2012 debut ‘Woman.’ Rhye will take the stage for an intimate performance at one of Montréal’s most historic venues, The National. Former Red Bull Music Academy Bass Camp participant and Toronto R&B starlet Charlotte Day Wilson will open.

Tickets for all events are available starting August 31st at redbullmusicacademy.com/mtlweekender2017

The Red Bull Music Academy Weekender will include an educational component in the form of a Red Bull Music Academy “Bass Camp.” As an organisation dedicated to fostering emerging talent and creativity, the Academy will select 20 of Canada’s most promising producers, vocalists and beatmakers to take part in a series of lectures and workshops at the Phi Centre. The full list of participants will be announced on September 6th.
