World Record Attempts, Free Concerts, Student Workshops & More Highlight Schedule for 2017 SING! Toronto Vocal Arts Festival

 Vocal music will take centre stage at SING! The Toronto Vocal Arts Festival, taking place at various downtown locations from May 11-28, 2017. The festival highlights the best Canadian and international vocal talent with ticketed and free performances and workshops at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, The Distillery Historic District, and many other downtown venues.

Now in its sixth year, highlights of the festival include:

– Guinness World Record Attempts (Sat, May 13 – The Distillery Historic District): More than 250 amateur and professional singers, who come from all over the world but live in Canada, will attempt to break the Guinness World Records for the “most nationalities singing a national/regional anthem simultaneously” and “the most nationalities in a simultaneous popular music sing-along.” Applications to take part are currently being accepted at singtoronto.com.

– Free concerts(Sat, May 13 and Sun, May 14 – The Distillery Historic District): Outdoor stage performances by a variety of a cappella groups throughout the day.

– O Canada! The Golden Age of Canadian Pop (Thur, May 25 -St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts): Featuring Retrocity; Canadian singer-songwriter Lorraine Segato, formerly of the Parachute Club; theone-night-only reunion of members of the original Toronto cast of HAIR, complete with costumed audience members; and the presentation of the Slaight Music SING! Legacy Award to Toronto singer, voice coach, and vocal producer Elaine Overholt, who has performed with Ray Charles, Martin Short and Paul Shaffer and coached clients including John Travolta, Richard Gere and Sean Mendes.

– School Day Vocal Workshop Program (Fri, May 26 – Little Trinity Church): Music students from grades 7-12 will experience an unforgettable day of musical education, led by Grammy Award winning vocal ensemble New York Voices.

– SING! New York (Fri, May 26 – St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts): Acclaimed jazz vocal group New York Voices, known for their close-knit voicings, inspired arrangements and unparalleled vocal blend, joined by opening artist Blue Jupiter and hosted by Micah Barnes and FreePlay Duo.

– SING! and Learn!(Sat, May 27 – Little Trinity Church): Interactive workshops facilitated by expert performers and coaches guide professional and amateur singers alike in the art of vocal technique, performance, and group leadership and collaboration.

– Intimate Voices – a Classical Showcase (Sat, May 27 – Little Trinity Church): Internationally renowned vocal ensemble musica intima plus  Esprit Chamber Choir

– Art Battle@ SING! Toronto – Grand Finale! Live Competitive Painting(Sun, May 28 – The Opera House): Visual artists in collaboration with a cappella performing groups Element Choir, Beatsync and Countermeasure
