U.S. Raises Performance Permit Fee for International Musicians by 42%

November 1st, 2016

flagsBillboard has reported that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will increase the performance permit fees by 42 per cent for international musicians, including Canadians, planning a tour of the United States. Effective Dec. 20, 2016, the fee will go up to $460 USD, up from $325 USD.

The Executive Director of the Canadian Federation of Musicians (CFM), Liana White, told Billboard that artists, entertainers, and athletes from Canada, unlike those from other countries, do not have to be pre-cleared through a consulate and pay other related fees once they have been approved for the performance permit.

“While we recognize that for Canadians the USCIS artist visa process may be more simplified than other musicians seeking to enter the United States under the same permits; however, a fee surge of this kind adds an additional and unacceptable financial burden on our members,” says White in a press release put out by the CFM.

CFM is recommending P2 applications made by Canadian performers seeking access to the U.S. be received by their office no later than Dec. 19, 2016.  Applications received on or after Dec. 20, 2016 will be subject to the new fee.

As reported in January by Canadian Musician, the A2IM, which represents U.S. indie labels, is lobbying American lawmakers to ease the visa burden on Canadian musicians playing in their country. Also, in March, three American congressmen introduced legislation designed to streamline the P-2 visa process for Canadian artists entering the U.S. to perform. The Bringing Entertainment Artists to the States (BEATS) Act was introduced in Congress on March 21st by Representatives Dave Trott (R-Michigan), Chris Collins (D-NY), and Peter Welch (D-Vermont). The bill went to committee on March 21 but has yet to be sent for a vote in the House or Senate.
