October 21st, 2016

Dennis_KimThe Royal Conservatory of Music announced the appointment of acclaimed violinist and educator Dennis Kim to the faculty of The Glenn Gould School and The Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists, The Conservatory’s internationally recognized training programs for professional musicians. Kim is the concertmaster of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and a Royal Conservatory alumnus.

“Being appointed to the faculty of The Glenn Gould School and The Taylor Academy is a huge honour and a huge responsibility,” says Kim. “The Royal Conservatory is renowned internationally and it’s also where I first learned to play the violin—coming home is a dream come true!”

Kim has spent more than a decade leading orchestras around the world. He has served as concertmaster of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra in Finland. As a guest concertmaster he has performed with internationally acclaimed ensembles including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, and Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra.

Equally accomplished as an educator, Kim has served on the faculty of the Hong Kong Academy of the Performing Arts, Yonsei University, Korean National University of the Arts, and Tampere Conservatory, as well as music festivals around the world. In the summer of 2016, he worked with the students of the World Youth Symphony Orchestra at Michigan’s Interlochen Music Festival.

“Connecting our students with the leaders in their field is at the core of our program’s success. Dennis Kim is one of the most successful concertmasters in the world today and we are thrilled that he will be working with our students. The fact that Dennis studied at The Royal Conservatory as a young violinist and now returns to nurture our next generation of performers is a moving testament to the legacy of our school,” says Barry Shiffman, Associate Dean of The Glenn Gould School and Director of The Taylor Academy.

With this appointment, Kim joins a growing group of acclaimed artists who have been appointed to The Glenn Gould School and The Taylor Academy in recent years, including pianist John O’Conor; cellists Andrés Diaz and Desmond Hoebig; violinist Paul Kantor; and bassoonist Frank Morelli.

While a student at The Royal Conservatory, Mr. Kim studied under the guidance of acclaimed violinist Victor Danchenko. He plays the 1701 ex-Dushkin Stradivarius.

On January 15, 2017, Kim will perform with Australian oboist Diana Doherty in The Royal Conservatory’s beautiful Mazzoleni Concert Hall, in historic Ihnatowycz Hall. Tickets are $25 and are available at
