Canadian a cappella icons The Nylons have announced that their current tour will be their last and as such, SING! The Toronto Vocal Arts Festival will be bestowing the group with the SING! Legacy Award at their May 14 concert at Jane Mallett Theatre in recognition of their decades of inspiring singers and audiences.

Nylons founder Claude Morrison says, “It is with equal parts pride and humility that we receive this very gratifying honour. We, The Nylons, have been favoured over the course of many years for having inspired others who sought to emulate our accomplishments and endeavours, occasionally even surpassing us! The Nylons have for a long time been more than a career or a living: it has been a life. We are very thankful.”

With seven gold and platinum recordings, this four-member vocal group is one of Canada’s top international success stories.

As previous announced, SING! The Toronto Vocal Arts Festival is preparing to kick of its fifth year with an expanded 12-day event that will feature an eclectic range of performances. In addition to The Nylons’ farewell performance, other performances include international a cappella superstars Naturally 7, the annual “Oh Canada! Our Nation’s Greatest Hits” concert featuring acclaimed comedians Colin Mochrie and Deb McGrath along with singer Amanda Martinez, and a wide range of free and ticketed programming showcasing community, collegiate, professional, and emerging artists alike.

SING! Is committed to music education and has announced a brand new educational program in 2016. This includes a full-day experience for university and post-university a cappela singers on Saturday, May 7 in the Distillery District of Toronto.

SING!  is expanding its outreach to the university and post-university  a cappella singers to bring in some of the best groups to inspire and lead these ensembles. On May 7, there will be a full-day and evening of workshops and networking. The event centre will be Dancemakers Studio in the festival hub at Toronto’s Distillery Historic District. This event is not open to the public, so if a collegiate or post-collegiate a cappella group is interested in participating, visit www.singtoronto.com to apply to the festival, and indicate their interest in the collegiate/post-collegiate full day program.

Lovers of music are invited to the SING! Outdoor Stage on May 7 in the Distillery Historic District, where select collegiate and post-collegiate groups will be performing, showcasing some of the best in collegiate a cappella. There is no charge to this outdoor event.

Additionally, SING! will host its fifth annual School Day Vocal Workshop Program on May 13, 2016. Middle and high school music students are welcome to a full education day where students have the opportunity to interact with and learn from world-renowned musicians and teachers. Geared towards students between Grades 7-12, participants are challenged and engaged by three interactive masterclasses. This program offers a learning experience for students, vocalists, and music educators alike.

Students will be divided into two groups. Each group will participate in interactive sessions with renowned jazz singer and broadcaster Heather Bambrick and choral conductor/clinician Hussein Janmohammed. For the afternoon session, SING! presents a masterclass/performance with internationally renowned Naturally 7, who will be the evening headliner. In addition to an active recording career, Naturally 7 have just completed three world tours with Michael Bublé and have been met with standing ovations nightly in Europe, the U.K., Canada, Australia and the United States, performing  for millions of people.

This educational program will take place on Friday May 13th only, and space is limited. To obtain a registration form, contact info@singtoronto.com.
