Steppenwolf’s Goldy McJohn Dies at 72

GoldySteppenwolf keyboardist and founding member Goldy McJohn, born John Goadsby, passed away on Tuesday, August 1st due to a heart attack. He was 72.

As iHeartRadio reports, McJohn was a classically trained pianist and early adopter of the Hammond organ in rock music. He was also a member of Canadian R&B band the Mynah Birds in the mid-’60s and went on to co-found Steppenwolf with vocalist John Kay. The group mad major hits with 1968’s “Born to Be Wild” and “Magic Carpet Ride.”

A funeral will take place next Friday in Washington state, where McJohn lived with wife Sonja.

Submissions Open for the 2018 Canadian Music Centre Prairie Region Emerging Composer Competition

Emerging orchestral composers with a connection to Canada’s prairie region are invited to submit their works to the 2018 Canadian Music Centre Prairie Region Emerging Composer Competition. The deadline for submissions is Sept. 15, 2017.

This year’s contest – the 15th annual edition – offers a cash prize of $1,500, and a performance of the winning score by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra during the 2018 Winnipeg New Music Festival.
