CBCMusic.ca’s annual Searchlight contest is back, and this year it’s even bigger. Beginning Monday, Feb. 29, musicians of all types – including solo artists, duos, and groups from all genres – are encouraged to enter via www.cbcmusic.ca/searchlight. All applicants must submit a video of themselves performing one original song, as well as one high-quality MP3, before Wednesday, March 23.

Will SoundCloud’s Finances Force It To Shut Down?

SoundCloudAlan Cross points us to this article from FactMag stating the SoundCloud, one of the most popular online services for music creators, may be in a lot of financial trouble:

A report casts “significant doubt on the company’s ability to continue as a going concern.”

SoundCloud struck a landmark deal with Universal Music Group last month, but its latest financial filings suggest the company is in dire financial straits.

Musicians are invited to apply now for the 2016 edition of Unsigned Only, a worldwide music competition produced by the same people that produce the International Songwriting Competition (ISC). Unsigned Only is designed for solo artists, bands, and singers who are not signed to a major label record company or any of its affiliates, subsidiaries, or imprints. It’s a music competition with the stated goal of finding an outstanding, talented performer that needs to be discovered.

The Grand Prize winner will be awarded $20,000 USD in cash (plus additional prizes, to a total value of more than $100,000 USD) and one-on-one mentoring by an elite group of record company executives. First Place winners in each category will receive $1,000 USD in addition to other prizes. Second Place winners will also receive prizes. Winners for the competition will be announced in early September 2016.

Europe has long been a happy hunting ground for Canadian artists in all genres, and Flix Canada aims to increase our export of punk-inflected rockers considerably. This is a brand new Toronto-based booking agency whose primary focus is on Europe.

The company is headed by Eamon McGrath, a prolific singer/songwriter and author of some renown. To get the Flix facts, FYI recently interviewed McGrath.

Music Nova Scotia is accepting submissions for songwriters to attend the Gordie Sampson Songcamp, which takes place in Ingonish, Cape Breton on July 10 – 15, 2016.

At the Gordie Sampson Songcamp, emerging writers come from all over Nova Scotia to collaborate and co-write songs with their peers, mentor with award-winning artists, and learn from music industry leaders.

To be eligible to apply, songwriters must: currently live in Nova Scotia; be between the ages of 18-24; have links online to where Music NS can listen to three songs written by the applicant (on their artist website, YouTube, SoundCloud, Bandcamp, are most common) OR email MP3 recordings/demos.

The Nimbus School of Recording & Media has launched the fourth annual Nimbus Mix Contest, which features tracks from Universal Music Canada recording artists Lights, Head of the Herd, and Dear Rouge.

The Mix Contest has two categories: one for high school students and one for graduates or 19+. Competitors in both categories will have the opportunity to create their own mix (or remix) for a chance to win a $25,000 scholarship to attend Nimbus School of Recording & Media in Vancouver, BC.
