The winner of Canadian Musician’s 2016 CMW Sweepstakes have been chosen.

Wayne Neon has won two delegate passes and two seven-day festival passes for Canadian Music Week 2016, while Seán Savage has also won two seven-day CMW festival passes.

Wayne Neon is a member of the Amazing Tubular Orchestra and describes himself as the “illegitimate love child of Bob Dylan and Duke Ellington.”  He is a Toronto-based arranger and bandleader. His music blends folk, jazz, blues, rock, skiffle, country, mariachi, English Beat, Motown, Dixieland, Honky Tonk, shuffle, pop, beach party, and lounge music, which, he says, “gives new meaning to the word eclectic.”

CBC Searchlight Contest Regional Top 10s Revealed

After three weeks of watching, sharing, and voting, the results are in and the CBC has announced the regional top 10s in the Searchlight competition.

There are 23 regions listed below, each with the 10 finalists who will move on. In total, there are 230  finalist acts. Nine of the top 10 finalists were chosen by CBC Music judges, and one was chosen by popular vote, as indicated below.

The music industry has never been shy of using exaggeration as a negotiating tactic. Its deployment long precedes the mic drop as a way to shut down a debate. The manager Peter Mensch, whose roster includes Metallica and Red Hot Chili Peppers, is only the latest industry player to slam the emergency button marked “hyperbole”. “YouTube, they’re the devil,” he claimed during a recent Radio 4 documentary about the music industry. “We don’t get paid at all.”

Call for submissions: National Music Centre Artist in Residence Program

NMC’s unique approach to having a “living” collection allows artists to access its historic instruments in the composition and recording of new music, while at the same time balancing their preservation.

The Nimbus School of Recording & Media has announced the return of the YVR Songshop. Back for its second year, this exclusive five-day event will take place at Nimbus’s studios in Vancouver, BC from April 26-May 1st 2016.

Sponsored by Music BC, SOCAN, CCMIA, and Bell Media, Nimbus has curated a workshop that provides a practical toolkit to help songwriters develop their skills in the craft of writing unique, commercially aware songs.

Folk Music Ontario (FMO) is now accepting official/family showcase applications, Songs from the Heart applications, and members-only advance purchase conference registration from Ontario-based SOCAN members and other artists.

There are 36 official showcase and two family showcase slots available at the conference. Criteria that the jury will consider can be downloaded here, and more information is available on the FMO website’s Conference Showcasing page.

Country artists in Alberta can now submit applications for the inaugural Project WILD professional development program, which is designed to educate, promote, develop, and launch the careers of some of up-and-coming country and roots artists from Alberta. Project WILD has been held previous under the Peak Performance Project Alberta banner. The deadline for applications is May 4, 2016.  Top 12 artists will be awarded a $5,000 Development award and will all get to participate in an intense music and  industry bootcamp where, organizers say, “they will be pushed to the very limit of what they can achieve as artists.”

Casino Nova Scotia announced today that it will select an Artist in Residence for the third year in a row.  The $20,000 program will provide a local emerging musician or group with financial and professional support through Casino Nova Scotia and partners Music Nova Scotia as well as opportunities to develop their career through performance opportunities.
