"We tried to keep things minimal," says APlotAgainstMe guitarist Shawn Bradley, who helped the production and recording duties of his band's sophomore release, Deuce. Check the vid for a cool breakdown of the band's single, "Leah Leave," and read more for some further insight into APlotAgainstMe...
"The band started out with Sylvain (Lavigne), our singer, and another drummer," says Bradley of APlotAgainstMe's roots. "I approached them to produce some of their tracks, did their first record, and at their CD release party, I joined them onstage for a few tracks."
Shortly thereafter, Bradley joined the band as a second guitarist. Dan Page picked up the bass duties, and then-drummer Butch Gerald rounded out the lineup that recorded Deuce. Since that release, Mike Raymond has joined the band behind the kit.
During the recording of Deuce, Bradley and the band "tried to keep things minimal." He elaborates: "If there were stereo guitars, one of us was on the left and one was on the right. I'm a fan of ear candy in my productions, so you go back to the song for the 50th time, and you can still find new parts." Basically, he says, the band is all about the repeat listen.
The "ear candy" of which he speaks is both apparent and abundant on Deuce, and include things like delays designed to "trick your ear. In fact, "Raise The Dead," the album's lead-off track, is the only one to feature actual synth sounds. "I try not to use samples or plug-ins," explains Bradley of his recording style. "If there's a sound, I like to screw the signal on the way to the amp or get that raw source sound. I think it makes those tones bigger."
Deuce is indeed a "big" sounding record, recorded in Bradley's home studio and later mixed by David Bottrill (Tool, Muse, Moneen) and Vic Florencia (Danko Jones, Esthero). "It's a private studio," explains Bradley of his recording digs. "I had a record label when I lived in LA, which is where I started amalgamating that gear." At the same time, Bradley as assisting in other studios with the likes of Rick Rubin. Now back in Ottawa, Bradley focuses his recording talents on bands with whom he feels a connection and passion, lately working with Birthday Boys (www.birthdayboysmusic.com) and Rikers (www.myspace.com/rikersrikers) on their records.
