Early-Bird Application Price Still Available to Play Indie Week Canada 2018

13 Indie weekIndependent artists have until Jan. 23, 2018 to get the early-bird price on their applications to play Indie Week Canada 2018, which will be held in Toronto from Nov. 6-11, 2018. The early-bird application fee is $10. After Jan. 23, the fee rises to $20 and then again to $35 from March 27 to the final application deadline of July 16, 2018.

Cities can create conditions for live music to thrive

From the Carleton in Halifax, to the Silver Dollar Room in Toronto, to The Railway Club in Vancouver, reports that small and medium-size live music venues are struggling across the country are common. Rising property costs in Canada’s urban centres can make it difficult for owners to make ends meet and, increasingly, music creators who perform at these venues can’t afford to live in their own city.

The program  delivers intensive training sessions to prepare export-ready Canadian artists and music entrepreneurs with business skills and artistic product development to increase international trade and export market development. The project is aimed at self-managed artists and artist managers (along with other music company entrepreneurs active in artist development) who are export-ready or engaged in the process of becoming export-ready. The applications deadline is Dec. 15, 2017.

Canadian Musician Launches Campaign to Help Songwriter John Cody After Acclaimed Career Ended by Cancer

He is in desperate need of financial assistance due to cancer and other continually worsening health conditions that have taken his singing voice, ended his career, and left him in severe financial hardship.

RIP: Canadian Music Industry Icon Jan Vladimír Matějček (1926-2017)

JanJan Vladimír Matějček, an iconic and longtime member of the Canadian music industry and the first-ever CEO of SOCAN, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 23rd, 2017 surrounded by his family.

Matějček was a lawyer, music editor, publisher, and administrator. He made a career of championing music and the rights of its creators, having begun his career as a Foreign Relations Secretary of the Guild of Czechoslovak Composers.

Over the course of his 35-plus year playing career, Bona has performed with the likes of Mike Stern, George Benson, Chaka Khan, Harry Belafonte, and Pat Metheny Group.
