Submissions Open for CMW’s ‘Startup Launch Pad’ Pitch Competition

Clipboard01Submissions are now being accepted for Canadian Music Week’s Startup Launch Pad, which is a pitch competition for new businesses that are based in or connected to the music industry. The deadline for submissions is March 19, 2018.

The competition will take place during this year’s CMW conference on Wednesday, May 9th at the Sheraton Centre Hotel.


Entries Open for Slaight Music’s ‘It’s Your Shot’ Songwriting & Artist Development Competition

13 Indie weekSlaight Music has announced the launch of the It’s Your Shot songwriting and artist development competition. The contest, which is open to all musical genres, encourages Canadian artists to submit a song/and or video to for a chance to win a grand prize valued at $100,000 in total. The It’s Your Shot competition is one of the many initiatives put forth by Slaight Music, a company focused on discovering, developing, inspiring, and supporting Canadian recording artists.


BreakOut West Showcase Submissions Now Open

14 BOW Arlo MaverickShowcase submissions are now being accepted for the 2018 BreakOut West Festival, which are taking place from Oct. 10-14 in Kelowna, BC. Submissions close on March 21, 2018.

All performing festival artists must be residents of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, the Yukon and/or the Northwest Territories, for at least six months between January 1, 2017 and March 21, 2018. The mandate of the Western Canadian Music Alliance is to support artists and companies who reside in Western Canada a majority of the time and as such contribute to healthy and thriving music communities in the region. In the case of groups, 50% of the members must meet residency requirement.

And history they made as Alan Doyle, Jim Cuddy, Sarah McLachlan, Ed Robertson, Colin James, Barney Bentall and many more of Canada’s top musicians came together to cover Spirit of the West’s “Home for a Rest” in honour and support of frontman John Mann and his battle with early-onset Alzheimer’s.

Performing and recording as part of a benefit in John’s honour at the Commodore Ballroom in November 2017, the resulting video and song sit at the helm of a GoFundMe campaign to assist the 55-year-old singer in his extensive care for the devastating degenerative disease. 100% of the proceeds from the sales and streaming of the new release will go to the John Mann Trust Fund. “As a singer, I know that inspiration can happen at any moment,” says Grammy-nominated artist Kelly.  “So I’m encouraging everyone to go for it and create something that is unique to who they are.”


Dan Aykroyd & Judith Belushi Present “Out Of The Blues With The Official Blues Brothers Revue” to Support CAMH GIFTS of Light

Out of the Blues bannerDan Aykroyd and Judith Belushi Pisano, the widow of the late John Belushi, have announced a special performance of The Official Blues Brothers Revue at The Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto, on Wednesday, February 28th at 8 p.m. This fundraising event will benefit the CAMH Gifts Of Lights program, providing practical, meaningful gifts that meet the unique needs of mental health and addiction patients at CAMH.

The Official Blues Brothers Revue is a multi media interactive experience showcasing the undeniable talent of Kieron Lafferty (Elwood Blues) and Wayne Catania (Jake Blues), the duo hand picked by Akyroyd, Belushi Pisano and original Blues Brothers Musical Director Paul Shaffer. to continue where the iconic duo of John Belushi and Aykroyd left off.  Backed by the all star Intercontinental Rhythm & Blues Band, The Official Blues Brothers Revue will perform the blues and soul classics that were brought to the mainstream by the original Blues Brothers  —  including “Soul Man”, “Shout”, “Gimme Some Lovin” and “Sweet Home Chicago”. It promises to be an upbeat night of music and dancing sorely needed after one of the coldest winters on record.

Submission Deadline for Music PEI’s Canadian Song Challenge Extended to January 31

CSC bannerThe Canadian Songwriter Challenge is a project that will pair PEI songwriters with peers from across Canada. These songwriters will collaborate together for two days to co-write and record demos. On the third day, they will have the opportunity to pitch their songs to a panel of delegates, including music supervisors, publishers, labels, and other industry professionals from Canada and further abroad. Participating artists will also have an opportunity to pitch their own catalogue of songs.
