Matt Good plays TURF 2016

The Toronto Urban Roots Festival (TURF) has grown in recent years into one of the most anticipated and exciting music events in a city that’s ripe with them year-round. The unique inner-city setting and diverse but well-curated lineup help it stand out as a one-of-a-kind musical product, and for 2016, TURF organizers once again outdid themselves. Canadian Musician‘s Samantha Everts and Mark Matusoff were on the ground for TURF 2016, and we invite you to check out some of the Canadian and international acts that took to the event’s various stages this year. A full photo library follows Sam’s review below…

Canadian Musician Does the 2016 Polaris Music Prize Gala

Monday, October 3rd, 2016

While Canadian Musician‘s Andrew King was sequestered in the Grand Jury room, photographer Mark Matusoff was running around the main room of Toronto’s Carlu, capturing photos of the Polaris Music Prize Gala and its presenters and performers. Ultimately, Montreal producer Kaytranada’s phenomenal album 99.9% took the title and $50,000 grand prize, though the performances from seven of the 10 shortlisted acts proved, to borrow a perhaps overused cliche, that there were no losers associated with this, the 11th edition of the prize.

Revisit some of the highlights of the 2016 gala in Mark’s photos below.

DMN: It Is Time To Completely Rethink How Songwriters Get Paid

Friday, September 16th, 2016

Illustration_music_services_PC_625_418_90Here is a very interesting column from songwriter and musician Ari Herstand at Digital Music News. Much of the information is U.S.-focused, but it’s still a worthy read with a good breakdown of how royalties work in the streaming age.

As the battles rage on in Washington over the recent DOJ ruling for 100% licensing of compositions and theSongwriter Equity Act continues to sit in purgatory in the halls of the do-nothing Congress, it’s time we rethink how to approach songwriter royalties. Because clearly, relying on the laws to properly compensate songwriters is a losing (and timely) battle. By the time they figure it all out, many songwriters will have packed in their guitars for non-starvation careers – like working at Starbucks.
