Submissions Open for Music Ontario’s Canadian Songwriter Challenge

songwriter challegneMusic Ontario is now accepting submissions for its second annual Canadian Songwriter Challenge workshop. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, June 29, 2016.  The Canadian Songwriter workshop will be hosted at Metalworks Recording Studios in Mississauga, ON between July 26 and 28, 2016.


DMC Canada Announces Regional Toronto Competition for July 9

Pioneer DJ - 2016 DMC Canada - Toronto Regional LargeFollowing DJ Brace bringing Canada its second consecutive DMC World Online DJ Championship with his amazing set, DMC Canada has announced this summer’s first DMC regional event for Toronto.

The Toronto Ontario Regional DMC DJ Competition will be held July 9, 2016 at Rivoli (334 Queen St. W.). The cover at the door is $10.

The event will feature showcase performances from The Roots’ Scratch, 2015 DMC World Champion DJ Vekked, Fresh Kills, and DJ Grouch.

The event begins at 9 p.m.

Red Bull Music Academy Heading to Montreal in the Fall

RBMARed Bull Music Academy will be bringing its program of events, exhibitions, workshops, lectures, and studio sessions to Montreal from Sept. 24 to Oct. 28, 2016, making it the first Red Bull Music Academy to be held in Canada since the Toronto edition in 2007.

Burlington, ON’s Boys Night Out, among the kings of ’00s post-hardcore, have returned with their first new music in almost a decade: new EP Black Dogs will be released July 8th on Good Fight Music.

Of the rebirth of the band, vocalist Connor Lovat-Fraser says, “None of us really knew when or if this day would come, but I’m fairly goddamn sure that we all hoped it would… We may not be touring again any time soon but it’s pretty fucking rad to have the opportunity to write music together again.”


Lineup & Tickets Released for Niagara ReggaeFest 2016

reggaefest The lineup has been announced and tickets are now on sale for Niagara ReggaeFEST 2016, which will be held Saturday, July 9 from noon to 11 p.m. at the Bissell’s HideAway Resort in Ridgeville, ON. Juno Award-nominated band Ill Scarlett will play alongside Stereo Kid, Street Pharmacy, two-time Juno Award winners Lazo and Fergus Hamilton and Circle 5 band, Theatre Crisp, DareNots, Honey Runners and Jarek Hardy will round out the fabulous day long festival.

Organizers promise and high-energy music, a handmade vendor fair, photo booth to match the Reggae theme, sand sculpture, graffitti wall and more. This is an all ages, family friendly event.

Bissell’s HideAway is a picturesque vacation campground that serves cool beer or local wine. Papa Paul Kent is dishing the food complete with his own special jerk chicken on a bun.

The Banff Centre is currently accepting applications for its Independent Music Residency until July 13, 2016. The program will run Oct. 3-15, 2016.

The Banff Centre says the Independent Music Residency has been designed to meet the needs of emerging bands ready to take the next step in their careers and artistic development. It offers four indie bands a unique opportunity to write, rehearse, and record new music in a two-week stint at The Banff Centre, away from the distractions of touring and day-to-day life.

Western music is made up of just 12 notes, which yield a practically infinite number of songs. That’s the theory, at least. It’s only natural that composers mimic what’s been successful in the past, but as Robin Thicke and Pharrell learned the hard way, there’s a blurred line between inspiration and theft. And musical copyright continues to be a hot-button issue, affecting everyone from Madonna, Justin Bieber and Ed Sheeran to the mighty Led Zeppelin.


KoSA Calabria Bringing Percussionists to Italy

12 KoSAThe summer, renowned percussion program KoSA, which is founded and run by Canadian percussionist Aldo Mazza, is heading to the southern coast of Italy for KoSA  Calabria on July 21-24, 2016.

Attendees will immerse themselves in Southern Italian drumming, percussion, and rhythms in the scenic seaside village of Locri, Italy. The authentic natural setting of this beautiful southern Italian region is conducive to this unparalleled hands-on cultural learning experience, say organizers.
