A Conversation With… Mark “Pelli” Pellizzer

MAGIC!’s Mark Pellizzer (left) & Nasri

For this edition of Canadian Musician contributor Jeff Gunn’s “A Conversation With…” series, he speaks with Mark Pellizzer, the guitarist of monster Canadian pop/reggae act (and recent CM cover artists) MAGIC!

Over the years, I’ve noticed that the best musicians I’ve met have consistently possessed two traits: humility and focus. Multi-instrumentalist Mark “Pelli” Pellizzer, whose talents are expressed as a guitarist, pianist, singer, songwriter, producer, and mixer, is no exception. A member of the massively successful group MAGIC!, he co-wrote “Rude,” which peaked at No. 1 on Billboard in the US and Canada (and the top 5 in many more countries) and has garnered 575,000,000-plus hits on YouTube. That accompanies the band’s two JUNO wins, two Billboard Award nominations, and an American Music Awards nomination.

The Winners & Losers of SXSW 2015

Monday, April 13th, 2015

Audio Blood‘s Sari Delmar & Sacha Miller were on the ground in Austin as Canadian Musician‘s SXSW 2015 correspondents. Looking back at the fest, Sari shares her thoughts on the Winners and Losers of the 2015 edition of the world’s largest new music festival.

SXSW is a beast of a festival, but that’s why it’s the best time! The music industry is out in full swing, great bands take over every venue, and sponsors bring out the big guns. Everyone is trying to cut through the clutter. While some do it oh so well, others fall hard – and publicly. But hey! You know what they say… There’s no such thing as bad publicity.

Here are some of the winners and losers from our time in Austin!

Through Our “Summer Eyes”

Monday, March 9th, 2015

Stephan Ermel of Toronto indie rock quintet Midday Swim reflects on recording the band’s self-titled debut…

MS1

Rather than spending the recent family day long weekend – one of the coldest weekends of the season – warm and indoors with the fam, I went up north with my adopted family to a cottage along Jack Lake in the Kawarthas to continue recording our upcoming album, set to be released April 28th, 2015.

We spent the rest of that weekend surviving on frozen lasagna and Moose Tracks ice cream with no running water, very little heat, and a whole lot of instruments.

We’re pleased to host yet another edition of Canadian Musician contributor Jeff Gunn’s “A Conversation With…” series. This edition finds Jeff catching up with Beyonce guitarist Bibi McGill.

The warm summer wind seemed to quicken my pace and elevate my state of excitement as I made my way to Rawlicious in Toronto’s Yorkville neighbourhood. Once inside, I was greeted by one of the greatest guitarists and musicians on the touring scene, Bibi McGill. She was kind enough to meet for our interview on her night off while in the middle of Beyonce’s On the Run Tour. Guitarist, musical director, entrepreneur, and yoga instructor, Bibi’s spiritual character beams both onstage and in everyday life.

10 Things You Shouldn’t Do When Showcasing at SXSW

Wednesday, January 7th, 2015

sxsw-2013-6th-street-austinCanadian Musician contributed Sari Delmar has some wise words for artists getting set to showcase at SXSW 2015 in Austin, TX.

I’ve been to South by Southwest (SXSW) for the past few years and every time I go, there’s a common thread to bands that stand out from the crowd. They’re full of energy, ready to network, and of course, have killer songs.

But most of all, they’re prepared for the special kind of beast that is SXSW. And we all know – this is a weird one. South By is a big deal and a big opportunity if you play your cards right. In 2014, some of my favourite Canadian acts took the plunge to Austin – Arkells, Grand Analog, and Slow Down Molasses, among many others – and with my artist development hat on, I got to see who stood out from the pack.

While many acts are impressive (and many more are not), there’s always a few that miss their chance to make a strategic impact. I’ve come up with a few tips below garnered from my time watching and learning at SXSW 2014.

Stars amidst their highly-anticipated POP Montreal set

Canadian Musician‘s sweet and stylish correspondents Candice Dugas and Melanie Cheung are on the ground in Montreal to cover POP Montreal. This year’s bill is as diverse as ever and features a heap of Canadian and international headliners performing around the city. Words are by Candice, shots are by Mel. For more from the ladies, check out The Run In.

With four days of POP madness down, we had to ease into the last day of the Festival. We returned to Divan Orange in time to catch the end of Dear Denizen’s set. Band members Chris Ngabonzia, Jeff Louch, Alex Hackett, Bucky Wheaton and Alex Crow grooved away the rainy Sunday afternoon blues with their brand of post-punk for a hometown crowd.

Our day began at Divan Orange for L.A. Foster’s performance. Frontwoman Lesley Ann Foster delivered her alluring voice to melodic synths and R&B beats. Her soulful songs were inspired by her time in Buenos Aires, Mexico City, and Montreal. We also spotted Montreal-based model Irina Lăzăreanu, who came out to support the band. Foster’s definitely one to watch out for as an up and comer in the Montreal music scene.

Our night began at Church of St. John the Evangelist, aka the Red Roof Church, one of our favourite perennial POP venues. The ethereal space was full for the sold-out show: Luluc + Adam Cohen. It was a special night on several accounts. It marked Cohen’s official release of his fifth and latest album, We Go Home, his birthday, and his first hometown performance in years.
