Matt Good plays TURF 2016

The Toronto Urban Roots Festival (TURF) has grown in recent years into one of the most anticipated and exciting music events in a city that’s ripe with them year-round. The unique inner-city setting and diverse but well-curated lineup help it stand out as a one-of-a-kind musical product, and for 2016, TURF organizers once again outdid themselves. Canadian Musician‘s Samantha Everts and Mark Matusoff were on the ground for TURF 2016, and we invite you to check out some of the Canadian and international acts that took to the event’s various stages this year. A full photo library follows Sam’s review below…

Canadian Musician Does the 2016 Polaris Music Prize Gala

Monday, October 3rd, 2016

PolarisFinale009

While Canadian Musician‘s Andrew King was sequestered in the Grand Jury room, photographer Mark Matusoff was running around the main room of Toronto’s Carlu, capturing photos of the Polaris Music Prize Gala and its presenters and performers. Ultimately, Montreal producer Kaytranada’s phenomenal album 99.9% took the title and $50,000 grand prize, though the performances from seven of the 10 shortlisted acts proved, to borrow a perhaps overused cliche, that there were no losers associated with this, the 11th edition of the prize.

Revisit some of the highlights of the 2016 gala in Mark’s photos below.

Canadian Musician Does Arboretum Music Festival

Sloan

Sloan

It’s been a busy summer for writer Samantha Everts & photographer Mark Matusoff, who were once again on the ground to cover a music festival for Canadian Musician. This time, it was Ottawa’s Arboretum Music Festival, running August 17-20 and featuring the likes of Sloan, Operators, Dilly Dally, Evening Hymns, and many others.

Slow-o-o-o-an! Slow-o-o-o-an! That was what the audience at Arboretum Festival kept calling for as Sloan ducked backstage before playing a second set of their biggest hits on the final stop on their One Chord to Another Tour in Ottawa. With Toronto hardcore band Metz canceling the day before due to a birth (mazel tov!), that Sloan would play two sets added to the buzz in the hipster air at Festival Plaza at City Hall.

Canadian Musician Does WayHome – Day 2

A Tribe Called Red

A Tribe Called Red

Samantha Everts & photographer Mark Matusoff braved the intense heat for Day 2 of WayHome 2016, which happened July 22-24 in Oro-Medonte, ON. Here’s the recap:

Rolling into a music festival exhausted from lack of sleep and covered with dirt and smears of yesterday’s makeup didn’t hold anyone back from returning for the second day of WayHome. With Arcade Fire at the top of everyone’s list, another heat warning was issued for the residents of Barrie, ON, informing everyone to stay inside and away from direct sunlight as much as possible. Clearly the Weather Network folks weren’t getting through to the Wayhomies, as even more people filled the festival fields for Day 2.

Wayhome001

Once again, Samantha Everts & photographer Mark Matusoff slid into summer festival mode to bring you a recap of WayHome 2016, which happened July 22-24 in Oro-Medonte, ON.

About 35,000 music fans descended upon Burl’s Creek event grounds braving extreme heat for the second-ever WayHome Music Festival this past weekend in Oro-Medonte (just outside of Barrie, ON). Headliners for the three-day fest included LCD Soundsystem, Arcade Fire, and The Killers, with four stages hosting a total of 72 emerging and established acts.

Canadian Musician Does Bestival – Day 2

Monday, June 20th, 2016

Bestival101 (1)

Samantha Everts & photographer Mark Matusoff were on the ground for the 2nd Canadian edition of Bestival in Toronto. The fest went down June 11-12, 2016, and we’ve got your recap of Day 2 right here.

Day 1 and Day 2 of Bestival couldn’t have been more different. Gone were the sparkly neon costumes and in were the all-black-clad Cure-idolizing folks. On the second day, festivalgoers could easily just stay put at the main stage of mostly British rock fare, munch on nearby food truck snacks, and drink without realizing other activities were happening (save for the thumping deep bass beat between song changes).

Canadian Musician Does Bestival – Day 1

Bestival001 (1)

The awesome duo of writer Samantha Everts & photographer Mark Matusoff was out for another weekend of music, this time on the ground for the 2nd Canadian edition of Bestival in Toronto. The fest went down June 11-12, 2016. Check out a review and photo library from day 1 below.

If anything, the extreme heat on Saturday encouraged festival goers to shed more layers of clothing and add even more sparkles to their elaborate costumes. Bestival is a hybrid festival of electronic and rock imported straight from the U.K., this year with dream-pop stoners Tame Impala and icons The Cure headlining.

Ever After Festival - CM (10 of 10)

Canadian Musician writer & photographer Samantha Dotson was in the KW region this past weekend for the Ever After Music Festival, featuring some Canadian EDM heroes alongside massive international headliners. Here are some of her thoughts & shots…

Massive blowup mushrooms. This was one of the first sights you would have seen, had you been apart of the thousands of EDM enthusiasts who flocked to Bingemans amusement park for the 2016 edition of the Ever After Music Festival last weekend.
