Canadian Musician contributor Samantha Dotson had her camera out on May 6th, 2016 for iHeartRadio Fest. A highlight of Canadian Music Week 2016, the event featured a stacked lineup with the likes of Jocelyn Alice, Scott Helman, Coleman Hell, Shawn Hook, X Ambassadors, and Tegan & Sara.

In Memory: Maestro Joseph Ichkhanian (1931-2016)

ichkhanianCanadian Musician‘s annual Guitar Feature is out now in the May/June 2016 issue. Regular contributor Levon Ichkhanian wrote the story, and it is dedicated to the memory of his uncle, Maestro Joseph Ichkhanian, who passed away on March 29, 2016.

A Lebanese citizen and of Armenian descent, he began playing the guitar in 1949 with Professor Vruyr Mazmanian and was subsequently offered a scholarship by the Spanish government. He continued his artistic education and music from 1959 to 1962 at the Royal Academy of Music of Madrid.

There’s a Chinese proverb that I’m fairly sure is made up, but it applies pretty damn well to Heavy Montreal, or at least those of us blessed enough to have media credentials: that the word for crisis is the same as that for opportunity.

Toronto photographer and Canadian Musician correspondent Mark Matusoff is on the ground in Ottawa for this year’s edition of the RBC Ottawa Bluesfest. Following an off-day for the fest on Monday, here are photos and findings from Tuesday, July 14th – Mark’s final day onsite.

A wet and stormy day at LeBreton Flats couldn’t stop another round of great performances at RBC Ottawa Bluesfest 2015. Operators were the first band to perform on Tuesday evening, delighting the audience at the Claridge Homes stage with their raw synth rock.

In the aftermath of a wild Friday night with Kanye West packing LeBreton Flats, Saturday afternoon initially saw a much smaller crowd which grew steadily through the day until headliner Iggy Azalea capped off another great day of music.

Toronto photographer and Canadian Musician correspondent Mark Matusoff is on the ground in Ottawa for this year’s edition of the RBC Ottawa Bluesfest. Here are photos and findings from Mark’s first day at the fest.

There is only one Yeezus in the world, and last night he rolled into RBC Bluesfest as the Friday night headliner along with some other international acts that had Lebreton Flats in downtown Ottawa packed.

Earlier in the day, Vancouver pop-punk outfit Mariana’s Trench were a welcome surprise to the lineup in how energetic and fun they were to watch, even if you don’t listen to pop radio.
