The Sheepdogs

As Canadian music has become even more of a force in the global music scene, the Canadian Blast BBQ at SXSW has become a must-attend event for international delegates. Here, people can meet with Canadian delegates and bands and get a first-hand glimpse at some of the country’s most prominent and up and coming acts. Because it’s one of the festival’s first music-related events, held on the Wednesday afternoon when music delegates first begin to arrive, the event is well attended and drives Canadian attendance in the early days of the festival.

For the past eight years, the Canadian Blast BBQ has provided the opportunity for record labels, management companies, and other international delegates to meet with Canadian labels and bands in a really laid back atmosphere over good food and even better Canadian music. Bands and labels are able to spread the word about their showcases later in the week, set meetings with international delegates, and really get an idea of who is doing what at the festival.

Representing PEI is the charismatic Tim Chaisson who, with fiddle in tow, brings a mix of indie roots and a hint of celtic charm to the stage ; meanwhile, Haligonian Ben Caplan brings the tradition of folk storytelling with a hint of madness and fervour akin to that of Tom Waits that seems to be lacking from other artists showcasing in Austin this year.
