Red Bull Music Academy Heading to Montreal in the Fall

Thursday, June 23rd, 2016

RBMARed Bull Music Academy will be bringing its program of events, exhibitions, workshops, lectures, and studio sessions to Montreal from Sept. 24 to Oct. 28, 2016, making it the first Red Bull Music Academy to be held in Canada since the Toronto edition in 2007.

“We are very excited to return to Canada and to host our next edition of the Red Bull Music Academy here in Montreal. Some of the most daring music makers from around the globe will soon arrive here to share their musical vision, and this year’s home base in Montreal offers both participants and the Academy the opportunity to deepen relationships with Canada’s vibrant and thriving creative scene,” says Many Ameri, co-founder of Red Bull Music Academy.

Over five weeks, 70 emerging music makers from around the world will come together in custom-designed spaces at the Phi Centre, a multi-disciplinary art institution that cultivates all aspects of creativity. Alongside accomplished artists from varied styles, methodologies, and cultures, they will exchange personal perspectives and free-ranging ideas on every facet of music making. At the same time, Red Bull Music Academy will present a five-week festival of concerts, club nights, and public talks at the city’s music and cultural venues, exploring local musical heritage and shining a light on the modern musical landscape.

“The Red Bull Music Academy at the Phi Centre expresses the perfect synergies between their concept, the Phi Centre’s philosophical outlook and facilities, and our mandates in music and education programming. We are honoured to collaborate with them in bringing the prestigious Red Bull Music Academy to Montreal,” adds Phoebe Greenberg and Penny Mancuso of the Phi Centre.

Montreal will be the 18th host of Red Bull Music Academy’s annual conference and festival. The Academy already has close ties with Montreal as an epicenter of the Canadian creative scene. Forward-thinking Montreal producer Lunice (LuckyMe, Warp) is an alumnus of the 2010 Red Bull Music Academy in London, and handcrafted bass music artist Xavier León (Sibian & Faun) is an alumnus of the 2011 Madrid edition. The Academy also has a longstanding partnership with MUTEK, a festival that has helped cement the city’s reputation internationally as a magnet for visionary electronic and experimental arts.
