The 2016 CBC Searchlight Contest winner was revealed Sunday night during a televised special on CBC Television… and the winner is Desirée Dawson from the Vancouver area. Dawson beat out the other final four contestants: PEI’s Dylan Menzie and Ontario’s Andi and popular vote winner Teo Milea. The final winner was decided by a celebrity panel of Dallas Smith, Sarah Blackwood off Walk of the Earth, and Maestro Fresh Wes.

Dawson later responded on Instagram, writing:  “WOW!!!! Feeling so incredibly grateful for this experience. It feels so strange to say that I am this years winner of the CBC searchlight!!! Wow!! So much love to the other wonderful bands who also happen to be AMAZING AMAZING people who I feel lucky to have spent time with. Thanks again for the love and support everyone. You make my heart so happy. I hope I make yours happy too. I love you. I love you! THANK YOU!!! I will be playing at the CBC music festival on May 28th in Toronto!!! I always said that the first music festival i went to, I would be playing.. AND LOOK AT THAT! So exciting! AND..My first single “hide” was released on iTunes today! Go to iTunes to find “Hide” , the song that I entered the contest with!”

As the Searchlight winner, Dawson will appear at the the CBC Music Festival in Toronto on May 28, and will receive a grand prize valued at $50,000 that includes $20,000 worth of equipment from Yamaha Canada, a Career Booster package from Canadian Musician magazine, including a studio session at Metalworks Studios, mentorship, album production, distribution, and more.
