The Montreal International Jazz Festival, one of the largest jazz fests in the world, is heading into its 36th and will be kicking off this Friday, June 26th, and continuing until Sunday, July. 5th.

Known for its eclectic lineups that bring together legendary jazz staples and emerging, forward-thinking talent, this year’s festival features Beruit, Erykah Badu, Lucinda Williams, Joss Stone, Whitehorse, Hewy Lewis and The News, BadBadNotGood, Molly Johnson, Colin James, Steve Miller Band, Huey Lewis & The News, Adam Cohen, and many more. The programming spans free shows and indoor programming all across the Place de Arts in downtown Montreal.

The festival also features a number of awards presentations. This year, James Cotton will receive the second annual B.B. King Award, in recognition of his “exceptional talent of an artist who has left an indelible mark on the blues scene.” As well, Erykah Badu will receive the 2015 Ella Fitzgerald Award for her career that has shaped the landscape of contemporary R&B. Al Di Meola will pick up the Mile Davis Award to celebrate his exceptional jazz catalog.

Canadian Musician will be on-site for the first weekend of the festival taking in the shows and interviewing performers. Be sure to check the Canadian Musician YouTube page next week for those interviews.
